Original autograph manuscript journal of an officer during the American Revolution, who took part in the battles of Long Island, White Plains, the retreat through New Jersey, Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown, and the winter at Valley Forge. Journal dated from May 27, 1776 to May 12, 1778.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff.
